Caustic Soda Pearls for Soap Making: Saponification Essentials for Detergent Plants

Every ton of soap begins with a reaction between fat and caustic soda. For soap and detergent producers - especially across West Africa, East Africa and Southeast Asia - the form and purity of that caustic directly shapes kettle time, soap color and final yield.

The Saponification Basics

Saponification is straightforward: NaOH splits triglycerides into soap (fatty acid sodium salts) and glycerol. What is not straightforward is doing it repeatably at plant scale:

  • Lye strength: soap kettles typically run 28-32% NaOH liquor (about 30°Bé). Prepare it by dissolving pearls into water with circulation - pearls sink, disperse quickly and leave no dust film on the charging floor.
  • Dose by saponification value: each oil has its own SAP value (mg KOH/g). Convert to NaOH demand, then trim with a small excess and neutralize - guessing leads to free caustic in the noodle or greasy, unsaponified stock.
  • Temperature discipline: hold the kettle in the 80-95°C band; overheating darkens the soap and drives unwanted color body formation.

Why Purity Shows Up in the Soap

  • Na₂CO₃ (carbonate): consumes NaOH without saponifying anything, weakens the lye and leaves gritty carbonate specks in the noodle.
  • NaCl (chloride): interferes with settling and salting-out control; chloride also accelerates kettle-steel corrosion over time.
  • Fe₂O₃ (iron): even hundredths of a percent tint the soap yellow-grey - the reason premium white soap noodles demand low-iron caustic.

Why Pearls Suit Detergent Plants

Pearls are the dosing-friendly form of NaOH: they pour cleanly from the bag, feed hoppers and screws without bridging, and generate almost no dust in the charging area. For plants running continuous saponification or automated lye make-down, that means fewer stoppages and a cleaner workspace than flakes.

Our Recommendation

We recommend DSC Trading's Caustic Soda Pearls 99% min (TIANYE brand) for soap and detergent duty: 25 kg PP bags with moisture-proof liner, 27 MT per 20' FCL without pallets (25 MT palletized), SGS inspection and per-lot COA covering NaOH, Na₂CO₃, NaCl and Fe₂O₃. As a UN 1823 Class 8 exporter shipping regularly to Durban, Mombasa and Southeast Asian ports, we understand the documentation your clearing agent expects. Request a quote with your destination port and monthly volume - CIF/FOB pricing within 12 hours.

If you are converting a line from flakes to pearls, or tuning lye strength for a new oil blend, send us the details - we will share make-down and dosing guidance from comparable installations before your first container ships.
