Most plants that buy caustic soda flakes do not use them as solids - they dissolve them into 20-50% liquor first. The make-down step looks simple, but it is where most caustic-related accidents and equipment failures happen. Done right, one operator can prepare several tons of liquor per shift with no drama.
Respect the Heat of Solution
Dissolving NaOH releases roughly 44 kJ per mole - enough to push a batch from 25°C to over 80°C if you charge flakes into a small volume of water too fast. Three rules keep it controlled:
- Always flakes into water, never water onto flakes. A thin caustic layer wetted from above forms a hot, sticky gel that spatters.
- Charge slowly under agitation. Add flakes at a rate the cooling capacity can follow; a tank jacket or cooling coil sized for the full batch heat saves hours of waiting.
- Plan the batch around the temperature curve. For 30-40% liquor, expect a wide temperature plateau near 60-80°C during charging - vessel and gasket selection must handle it, not just the final liquor temperature.
Materials That Survive Caustic
- Good: carbon steel (ambient to moderate temperature), 316L stainless, PP, PVDF, EPDM gaskets.
- Never: aluminum, zinc, galvanized steel - caustic attacks them chemically, releasing hydrogen.
- Careful: standard PVC softens near the temperatures a make-down batch reaches; CPVC or PP piping is the safer budget choice.
Layout That Actually Works
The cleanest configuration is a hopper-and-eductor: flakes are added through a sealed hopper into a recirculating eductor on the tank loop, so they dissolve below the liquid surface while dust never reaches the operator's breathing zone. Top-dumping bags into an open tank works, but it maximizes dust, splash and caking on the walls.
Safety minimums: face shield over chemical goggles, caustic-resistant gloves and suit, an eyewash station within 10 seconds' walk, and a posted 2% boric-acid or acetic-acid rinse instruction.
Which Flakes Dissolve Cleanly
Insoluble residue and dark specks in the finished liquor usually trace back to low-purity flakes or damaged, moisture-aged bags. We recommend DSC Trading's 99% min Caustic Soda Flakes (GB/T 209-2018 superior grade) for make-down duty: three-layer moisture-proof 25 kg bags, fast clean dissolution and COA with every lot.
