Ask three engineers what sodium hexametaphosphate does and you will get three answers: it softens water, it disperses kaolin, it keeps RO membranes from fouling. All three are the same chemistry seen from different sides - SHMP sequesters the calcium, magnesium and iron ions that would otherwise crystallize, agglomerate or deposit.
Scale Inhibition in Water Systems
In circulating water and pipeline systems, hardness ions precipitate as calcite the moment temperature or pH pushes them past saturation. SHMP wraps those ions in soluble complexes at part-per-million doses, so crystals never nucleate on pipe walls or reverse-osmosis membranes. Typical dosing runs 2-10 ppm in circulating systems, and RO antiscalant programs use it as a low-cost baseline before specialty polyphosphates take over. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor by forming a protective film on ferrous surfaces.
Dispersion in Ceramics and Paper
- Ceramics: a fraction of a percent of SHMP in the slip cuts viscosity dramatically, letting tile bodies reach higher solids content without sacrificing flow - which means faster casting and lower drying energy.
- Paper: used to disperse pigments and fillers in coatings, preventing the flocculation that shows up later as poor print gloss.
- Paints and pigment slurries: the same deflocculating logic applies wherever a mineral suspension must stay stable for days.
Food Applications (E452i)
Food-grade SHMP binds water and chelates metals: it improves water-holding in processed meat, keeps dairy emulsions from stratifying, protects canned food color, and prevents beverage precipitation. The food use is a specification question - the chelation chemistry is the same as the industrial use.
Specification and Supply
- CAS 10124-56-8, (NaPO₃)₆, sold under the DSC brand.
- Purity 68% minimum (P₂O₅ basis); insoluble matter and iron are the items buyers should watch on the COA.
- Packed 25 kg kraft paper or plastic woven bags; 27 MT per 20' FCL without pallets, 25 MT palletized.

SHMP slowly reverts to orthophosphate in hot, humid storage - request the storage sheet along with the COA when you inquire, and plan your inventory so the oldest lots move first.
